So I decided that I would like to go to a Easter service. For anyone who doesn’t know (though if you are reading this you proably do) I am not Catholic but my family used to be (some are still). I really wanted to see what a Mass was like both as a cultural curiousity and as a heritage exploration. I decided to go to Mass at Trinity Colleges Chapel. After being so worried about an outfit it turns out there was no need and almost everyone was wearing the same thing I would have worn to Meeting for Worship (jeans and tee – according to Edun Live’s website “the Americana”), but then again better to be a little over dressed then under it’s just more respectful when your doing something outside your own culture.
In any case it was really interesting the Choir’s singing was great, the Minister was really quite funny, his sermon was very smart, and I got to see a baptism. (the only other baptism I’ve ever been to in my own but I was a baby and it was a secret baptism preformed by my Nana in her Kitchen so I don’t think that really counts) I’m really glad I went but I think that I’m still more Quaker then anything else.
For the afternoon I went to the Guinness Storehouse and went on a tour of the facilities. It was another really well done exhibit. It showed side by side the old way to make Guinness along with the new technologies they used today. Interesting fact Arthur Guinness orginally brewed Ales not Stouts but when Stouts were developed he desided to see if he could prefect it and in doing so decided to stop brewing Ales altogether. The best part of the exhibit was the history of the advertising, though the free beer wasn’t so bad either!

So today was a beautiful sunny day and despite it being a fairly long walk I decided to walk to the apartment I’m staying at this weekend. It was a very nice walk through parts of town I haven’t been to yet so it was really nice to see other things, though because it was good Friday a lot of places were closed. The part of town is really nice all of the houses are very cute and there was a lot of really beautiful flowers in everyones gardens. I was particularly excited by the birds on my walk. There was this small fenced in driveway like place full of chickens. I only go pictures of one of the more average looking chickens but I saw a really neat looking rooster that was too far away to get a photo of but I’m determined to see it up close before I go back to my normal apartment. (sorry photos to come later I’m currently charging the camera battery) Though we all know how much I love chickens (a moment of silence for my secret pet chicken Samson from High School. I hope you are well where ever you are now…) I was really struck by theses other birds they were basically crows but with large patches of white on them. I came home and looked them up and turns out they were magpies. And I think I am going to use them in my next shirt design. As is always good when working with unfamiliar animals (since we always seem to make them mean something other then what the are) I looked up the folk meaning of the bird and found this rhyme (good thing I looked it up cuz originally I was only going to draw one!) (photo and rhyme from wikipedia)
- One for sorrow,
- Two for joy,
- Three for a girl,
- Four for a boy,
- Five for silver,
- Six for gold,
- Seven for a secret never to be told.
In Ireland, it is common to recite “Five for a wedding”.
Oh and by the way on my walk I saw two so don’t worry!
Well hello again, sorry for the silence but I’ve be happily absorbed in my work!! For those of you that are EDUN fans please note that the EDUN LIVE blog is lookin’ a bit slicker these days and if you are part of the mailing list you might have see a little of my influence in your in-box today! I love that all week I’ve done nothing but make design and aesthetics choices (not that I don’t love math and figuring out print prices….). I’ve been getting a lot of love from my last post due to the peacock shirt I just completed so I’m extra excited about the new one I’ve been working on based on the architectural details from some of the buildings around town. We have a long week end this week due to Easter so I’m hoping to get most if not all of it complete by Tuesday. I’ll be staying in a different part of the city at one of the gals from EDUN LIVE’s place this weekend so I’m looking forward to seeing what another part of town has to offer!
side notes and (not so) daily inspirations:
So Saturday there was a big race, the Grand National and it seems I have my parents good timing when it comings to bars. I had no idea this was going on but I had just finished at the tourist information booth getting maps and subway scheduled and decided to stop in a bar for a drink and dinner before I went out to a party with my roommates. Two women ended up sitting next to me and they were very excited. They asked me how much money I had on the race when I said none they were surprised and started to explain what horses they had bet on and how much money the would win if one thing happened and how much if another happened. It turns out everyone was in the bar for this race and once it started they were screaming at the television and grabbing my arm in excitement. And then a horse that was rated 100-1 won. My two new friends lost but it was so much fun to watch it with them.
Side notes:
The bar had the best stew I’ve ever had and I had no idea that potatoes could taste so good.
The Guinness did not disappoint.
I found a new favorite beer at the party last night: Staropramen, it’s from Prague.
Here are the things I’ve found inspiring so far:

Well here I am finally!! Still a little jet-lagged and waterlogged (so far I find that it’s true what they say about the rain) but here! I don’t start at Edun till Monday so I had today (and the bit of yesterday I was awake for) to explore a little. In the part of town I’m staying in there is a small river with a park around it. Best part of it… the river is built up of locks! I immediately marked myself as a tourist and took a zillion pictures (photo’s to come if any of you are as nerdy as I am…). On the way back I stopped of to get some groceries and got some great Irish Cheddar, had a quick snack of it and immediately passed out. Which brings me to today! I spent most of the day figuring out how to get to Edun. A task that should have only taken and hour but it is now almost six and I just got back. Direction has never been my strong suit. Plus I had to stop and look at… well everything. Favorite thing on that walk, a street performer playing the harp. I just loved it. It seems as though I shouldn’t have been so surprised but it was so big and beautiful and in the middle of a crowded street, it was an interesting juxtaposition. (That was for you Carl!)
As for my mission here… I told my house-mates what I was going to be working on and one of them said “oh that’s why you must have so many clothes” (nope I’m just a stereotypical American with a lot of things) and the other said “oh that sounds like expensive clothes” (since they are fairly made and organic). I think both are fair assumptions to make at first but I hope that they will look more into the company. Either way they seem like nice girls and I’m glad to be staying with them.
